First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy. It is the most exciting phase of a women’s life but it can also be full of uncertainties. That is why it is always a good idea to start planning for things you might need before baby's arrival.

If you are a first-time mum, it is natural that you are a bit nervous or anxious as your due date is getting nearer. You want to make sure everything falls into place and you have everything you need for the baby so that you don’t need to rush at the 11th hour.

As parents, we plan a lot of things way before our little angel arrives in this world but also might forget about minute things which we realize afterward.  That's the reason why you need to make a list of things you need to buy while pregnant.

It is recommended that you join mum’s groups online or use a few apps which could give you an insight into the development of the baby in the womb and also after birth. There are certain apps available that give an opportunity to all new mums nearby for meetups.

A printable checklist at the end of this post will help you have a better understanding of what exactly is needed, what you already have, and what you need to purchase for the little one.

Here is a list of things you need before your baby arrives:

 1) Nursery Items:

  1. The most essential thing there is going to be the bedding. It could be a Moses basket, crib, or a cot, bassinet.
  2. A firm flat mattress that fits the cot or basket
  3. A lightweight warm blanket in winters or a cotton wrap in summers.
  4. Keep Muslin Square, a few cozy blankets, swaddling cloth in the closet
  5. A baby monitor is also quite a useful thing to check if your baby is woken up in the middle of the night or fussy or crying. Quite a helpful device so that mum can get some sleep at night.
  6. A nice play mat to keep your baby entertained.
  7. Room humidifier to keep the required level of moisture in the room.
  8. Baby swing or bouncer could also be your favorite.

2) Feeding essentials:

  1. If you are breastfeeding you will need a nursing bra, breast pads/ nursing pads for the leak-outs, breast creams, and or nipple shield for sore nipples.
  2. If you are willing to bottle-feed or give formula milk, you will need BPA-free bottles, extra teats, bottle brushes, cotton bibs, if pumping milk then you might need milk storage bottles, sterilizer.

3) Nappies:

  1. Newborn babies need 10-15 nappies (newborn-size baby diapers) a day. You would just need a pile and pile of nappies for a newborn so keep it stocked.
  2. Some parents prefer cloth nappies too for their newborns to prevent rash, in case you use cotton nappies make sure you have waterproof covers in the bed.
  3. You would need wet wipes too for cleaning babies bottom (I used the one which was alcohol and perfume free)
  4. Changing mat is another one of the things which you need while you are on a flight, train anywhere using baby changing room.

4) Baby Clothes:

  1. At least 8 undershirts or vests or bodysuits. Loose comfy dress/gown for girls. If you opt for all-in-one suits that cover the legs of the baby you don’t need to buy lowers or socks for your baby.
  2. Make sure you have 2 cardigans/ jackets handy to protect the baby from cold.
  3. A few soft cozy hats and socks are some of the other essentials.
  4. You would need a lot of muslin squares, burp cloth, soft towels too in the initial few months

5) Bath time:

  1. A baby bathtub or bath support is required to hold your little one safe when bathing.
  2. You can use a baby cleanser that is gentle on the skin, baby shampoo, and a baby bath emollient, to keep the skin from losing moisture.
  3. Get some baby creams and lotions too.

6) Travel :

  1. A pram/ buggy/ pushchair is quite suitable as you don’t always need to hold the baby
  2. When traveling, out and about or you are out for grocery shopping.
  3. Transparent waterproof cover for the pram to protect baby from rain and wind.
  4. A rear-facing car seat is also important if the little one is likely to travel with you in a car.
  5. Slings and baby carriers are also extremely useful if your baby is a bit clingy or likes to be held up by you all the time. I have used both and I found them really useful while traveling or when we used to go shopping.

7) Others :
